The Nude in the 21st Century |

Uta Fehlhaber-Smith My art studies in Germany in the Sixties began with the focus on sculpture, where nude drawings were an important part of the curriculum. While it was important then to draw the human figure "academically correct" my interest later shifted to the expressionistic quality of that genre. The gender specific aspects and body language became more important to me. The standing female in this exhibit is an example of this ambition. While this alluring, one might even say sexy curvy back view of a female conjures up self confidence it also juxtaposes with a certain shyness and innocence. This was a quick drawing with watercolor sticks on cheap newsprint paper, which I mounted on acid free Arches paper. The mounting had some flaws, i.e. wrinkles. Oddly enough I am not so upset about this, since that effect may be seen as wistful comment to the transitoriness of beauty. | |
