Nairong, Oil on linen board, 14" x 11"

Why I paint: I enjoy everything about painting. I enjoy the smell of linseed oil, and the physical act of painting. I enjoy stretching and priming my own canvases or linen panels, and mostly I enjoy putting down colors. I enjoy the deeper view and challenge of painting from the human form. I also enjoy working in the elements, I paint on Sauvie Island, in the Columbia River Gorge, around Portland, at the Oregon Coast, and any open areas between and even beyond. I have painted in California and Washington. Year round I work from models at the Hipbone Studio.
Family: My father was in the US Air Force and I was born in England. Our family moved every time another brother came along - I have five brothers. I have been a soldier, a forest fire fighter, a truck driver, and I have worked in construction. In college, I studied science before being admitted to the school of architecture at the University of Oregon.
Art background: Although I have been drawing and painting since high school I began to take art classes in my later college years. I mostly work in charcoal and graphite, pen and ink, pastels, watercolors, but especially oils. My view of art and artists expanded considerably after college. I met Russell Chatham and was inspired by his subtle paintings, etchings and prints. I began to visit museums and galleries regularly. I have taken several workshops with excellent artists, including Scott Gellatly, Eric Jacobsen and Mitch Baird. My painting continues to evolve.
Design and composition: I am a practicing architect with my own firm, licensed in Oregon. I have been a teacher assistant for the University of Oregon Summer Program in Rome. I have critiqued for the University of Oregon architecture design studio reviews as well as product design studio reviews. In the past have taught workshops in perspective drafting at the Oregon School of Design, the Oregon School of Arts and Crafts (now OCAC), and the Northwest School of Woodworking. I have also taught classical sacred geometry at Marylhurst College. Design and composition in all media, including concrete, wood and brick, is important to me.
Galleries: The Portland Art Museum Rental Sales Gallery has represented my work since 2011. I have participated in regular juried shows and plein air events, and was accepted into the California Plein Air Painters group in 2017.
Inspiration: I am married to artist Nancy Klos, who has always encouraged me in my development as an artist - any success I may have I attribute in great part to her own inspired pursuit of art. Our daughter lives in Chicago, exploring her career in theater.
