Siren (2020), Woodblock print, 6” x 4”
Karina Andrews is a woodblock printmaker and watercolor painter based out of Astoria, Oregon, primarily creating atmospheric landscapes with woodblock prints exploring the dichotomy of stillness and energy present in the natural environment and watercolor miniatures that focus on the effervescent play of light on water, land and sky throughout the day. She began exploring more figurative work around the power and fragility of the female body after giving birth for the first time relatively late in life and suffering through a lengthy bout of postpartum depression, that really gave her sunshiny personality a run for its money. The unexpected feeling of being disconnected from a former body and self as one wades through a new way of being. The play of weakness and strength. The female forms she depicts seem to be held back or tucked inward in some way but also have an inner power and a bursting forth energy as though they are about to pull free from the that which is binding them.
