A Sense of Purpose, Purpose, Charcoal, 27" x 20"

My foundation is in painting and drawing and I have found that I especially love the directness of mark making. Quality of line; how it can go from thick to thin and back again, how it can carry different weights, how edges can merge or push against each other can be almost conversational in quality. Combining realistic accuracy and gestural expression through the medium of drawing is most appealing for me. My work typically focuses on the male figure, not only because of its complexity and beauty, but also for what I can convey with the figure’s attitude and gesture. Most recently, I have entered into a type of “stream of consciousness” drawing where I begin with purely abstract gestural marks and see what might suggest itself as I work back and forth with the charcoal and eraser. The result can often be a very satisfying surprise
